Fellow, Renal Service

Middlemore Hospital is the main hub for acute care and referral services within CM Health. It is an accredited, teaching hospital of Auckland University and caters for most medical and surgical specialties with a catchment area of around 550,000 people. 

We are currently seeking a locum Renal Medicine Fellow who is interested in joining our dynamic, progressive multidisciplinary department for a fixed term up to 12months from February 2025-February 2026. The role will be within the Renal service at Te Whatu Ora Counties Manukau, based at Middlemore Hospital, in South Auckland, New Zealand. 

Our Renal Department comprises senior medical staff, junior medical staff and a full team of ward and specialist nursing and allied health staff. We have a high quality under and post-graduate teaching program, as well as a focus on research. We treat over 700 dialysis patients across all dialysis modalities, and have a strong philosophy and organisational policy of independent and home based renal replacement therapy and quality assurance. 

The Renal service includes an inpatient ward, an acute 26 bed inpatient dialysis unit, 3 satellite dialysis units and 3 community houses. The service delivers outpatient care including in-centre haemodialysis, home haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and outpatient dialysis and nephrology clinics. The service covers all aspects of renal medicine apart from acute kidney transplantation and has a home based treatment philosophy. We look after approximately 300 patients who we work up for transplantation and who are returned to us early after transplantation at an adjacent hospital. Currently within our service we have 15 Renal Physicians, 4 Registrars, 1 Research Fellow and 2 House surgeons who work closely with our dedicated multidisciplinary Nursing and Allied Health team. 

The posts offer a broad focus on patient care, research and education, within an innovative and friendly work environment.

The opportunity exists to undertake interventional and procedural work for those with aptitude and previous experience (Tunnelled lines, Tenckhoff catheter insertion).

The Department of General Medicine is the largest of the 13 Departments in the Division of Medicine and has close ties with all the Medical specialities. All subspecialties contribute to undergraduate and post-graduate teaching programmes. The General Medicine experience at Middlemore is wide and varied providing an interesting and challenging clinical environment.
